Room 8 has been in Level 3 lockdown at home. Our challenge for the Zespri Young and Healthy Virtual Challenge this week has been to be active. Here are two ways the kids stayed active.
We are a class of Year 3 and 4 students at Ahipara School in the Far North of New Zealand.

Pet and Ag. Day 2021
Pet and Ag. Day 2021
Room 8 took part in the school's Pet and Ag. Day. Because of Covid this year, we were unable to have the usual pet parade but we could bring a photo or video of our pet to display. As well as making vaseline saucers from flowers, we brought our home made exhibits to school for judging. Some of us made mini gardens or parks and some made mini scarecrows. Our made-in-class exhibit displayed our Crafty Creatures. We had learned about weaving and French knitting. Then we made these into creatures by making arms, legs, hair and googly eyes. What do you like?

Making Model Bird Shelters
Making Bird Shelters
Room 8 children each developed a technology brief to construct a model bird shelter. We investigated available materials and the steps required in the process. We discussed the needs of birds and did a little bird watching around the school and at home. It was fun to spend most of a day at school, making our constructions to conclude this learning.

STEM with Room 3
Room 8 joined with our buddy class, Room 3, to take on the challenge of completing a project from specific criteria. We worked in mixed groups with the older students helping the
younger students. This time we had to create a package that would allow a raw egg to survive the impact after being dropped from 2 metres.

Remembering ANZAC
Remembering ANZAC
A special group of children from Room 8 made a poster as part of our learning about ANZAC Day. They made red poppies by following the instructions in their reading book and there was a lot of discussion about what the phrase "Lest we Forget" really meant. Their poster remembered those who fought and died in the wars, especially the first World War but also those who stayed behind and worked hard to support the troops. We shall remember them.
Tractor Trek and Big Feelings Day
Tractor Trek and Big Feelings Day
The whole of Ahipara School joined in with the presentation about "Big Feelings" and what we can do if we feel blue for a long time. We thought the student actors were very entertaining. Pat told us about her childhood and why she had a lot of blue feeling that had grown bigger and bigger as she got older. By the time she was much older she needed help with these feelings. It was a good message for us to ask for help if we are feeling blue.
After the talk we looked at all the tractors and vehicles that were displayed on the field. You can see how much fun we all had on that day!
Water Colour Painting Term 1 2021
Water Colour Painting of Tui
Room 8 observed and sketched the textures and patterns of tui, particularly those around their neck and throat. We used our lovely new water colours and carefully painted the body of the tui in cool colours, the colours of the ocean and the background in warm colours, the colours of the fire. By using contrasting colours the tui really stood out from the background. We shared our paintings at the assembly. Everyone loved them.

Team Building in Room 8
Team Building in Room 8
Room 8 had a lot of fun with team building games to start the year. We learned more about how an effective team works together to achieve more. We learned that we need to listen to people's suggestions and be patient, thinking about what the other team members are doing and how we could contribute. We tried not to do our own thing because that would prevent our team from succeeding in our mission.
